Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP2D6.

Of the four ingredients in NyQuil, the one that matters most here is dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant). Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear it. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab studies suggest can slow that same enzyme down. If it does, dextromethorphan could build up a bit more than usual, leading to stronger drowsiness, dizziness, or a foggy, lightheaded feeling.
I want to keep this in perspective, though. This concern is theoretical, based on test-tube work rather than real people taking these two together, so for an occasional dose of NyQuil it's unlikely to cause a problem. Still, if you use phellodendron regularly or feel unusually groggy, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

NyQuil is a combo product, and one of its ingredients, dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant), is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The berberine in Phellodendron may gently slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let dextromethorphan build up a bit, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy or jittery.
I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical concern based on lab studies, not on real cases of people getting into trouble. For most folks taking NyQuil for a few nights, this is unlikely to cause a real problem. Still, since NyQuil already makes you sleepy and Phellodendron is a wildcard herb, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before combining them.

DEXTROMETHORPHAN (Robitussin DM, others)
3 of 3Phellodendron contains berberine. Preliminary clinical research shows that berberine can inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) activity and reduce the metabolism of dextromethorphan. Theoretically, phellodendron may also inhibit the metabolism of dextromethorphan.

NyQuil is a combo product, and the piece that matters here is the dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant). Your body clears dextromethorphan mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and early human studies suggest can slow that same enzyme down. If it does, dextromethorphan can build up a bit higher than usual, which may mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy. Combined with the doxylamine antihistamine already in NyQuil, that sleepy effect could stack up.
To be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not on strong real-world studies, so I wouldn't panic. Still, since NyQuil already makes most folks groggy, it's worth running it by your pharmacist before combining the two.
