Fostamatinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP3A4.

Here's the gist with Fostamatinib (Tavalisse) and Phellodendron. Once you swallow Fostamatinib, your body turns it into its active form (called R406), and that active piece is largely cleared by a liver enzyme known as CYP3A4. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and early human studies suggest can mildly slow that same enzyme down.

If the enzyme works slower, more of the active drug could linger in your blood. That might nudge up Fostamatinib's usual side effects, things like higher blood pressure, diarrhea, nausea, or changes in liver tests. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how the chemistry looks, not proven harm. Please don't start or stop either one on your own. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Fostamatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tavalisse

Tavalisse (fostamatinib) is used to treat thrombocytopenia — dangerously low platelet counts — in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). It is specifically for people whose platelet counts have not improved enough with at least one earlier ITP treatment.

The goal is to raise platelet counts high enough to reduce the risk of serious bleeding. If platelet counts do not respond sufficiently after 12 weeks, the medication is typically stopped.
