Nimodipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Animal research suggests that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, a clinical study suggests that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone. Theoretically, phellodendron might also reduce blood pressure.

Here's the gist: nimodipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure as a side effect. Phellodendron contains berberine, and there's some animal and limited human evidence that berberine can nudge blood pressure down too. Put them together and the effects could stack, so your pressure might drop a little more than expected.

What that could feel like is dizziness, lightheadedness, a headache, or feeling faint when you stand up. To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based mostly on how these compounds behave, not strong human proof, so don't panic. Still, since nimodipine is usually given in a serious setting after a brain bleed, please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP3A4.

Here's the gist with nimodipine. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medication. The berberine in phellodendron may gently slow that enzyme down, at least based on lab and early research. If it does, nimodipine could linger in your bloodstream longer than expected and build up a bit.

Since nimodipine relaxes blood vessels, more of it on board could mean a steeper drop in blood pressure, leaving you dizzy, lightheaded, flushed, or with a headache. This is only a theoretical concern right now, not proven in people, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially while recovering from a brain bleed.

What Is Nimodipine Used For?

Brand names: Nimotop, Nymalize

Nimodipine — available as capsules and oral solution — is used to improve neurological outcomes after a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a type of bleeding that occurs around the brain when an intracranial berry aneurysm ruptures. It works to reduce the incidence and severity of ischemic deficits (areas of the brain damaged by reduced blood flow) that can follow this kind of bleed.

This use applies across nimodipine capsules, nimodipine oral solution, and Nymalize oral solution. It is indicated for adult patients regardless of how severe their neurological condition is at the time treatment begins.
