These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Phellodendron interacts with whole categories of medication. Pentobarbitone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Phellodendron in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Pentobarbitone
Pentobarbitone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Phellodendron interacts with.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Animal research suggests that berberine may have sedative effects. Theoretically, phellodendron might also have CNS depressants effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Pentobarbitone is a barbiturate, a strong sedative that slows down your central nervous system. The concern here is simple: phellodendron may add to that slowing effect. Phellodendron contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine has shown calming, sedative-like activity. Stack that on top of a powerful sleep medicine and you could feel more drowsy, foggy, or unsteady than expected, with slower breathing in higher-dose situations.
I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave rather than real cases in people. It is not a reason to panic, but since pentobarbitone is already potent, it is worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor before adding phellodendron. Don't start or stop anything on your own.

PENTOBARBITAL (Nembutal)
2 of 2Phellodendron contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can prolong pentobarbital-induced sleeping time. Theoretically, phellodendron might increase the sedative effects of pentobarbital.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: pentobarbitone is a barbiturate sedative, the kind of medicine that slows your brain down to help with sleep, calm seizures, or assist with sedation. Phellodendron's main active compound is berberine, and in animal studies berberine made pentobarbital-induced sleep last longer. So in theory, pairing the two could deepen or prolong the sedation.
What might that look like in real life? Possibly feeling extra drowsy, groggy, foggy-headed, or slow to wake up. Keep in mind this is theoretical, drawn from lab and animal work, not solid human data, so I don't want to overstate it. Still, since pentobarbitone is already a strong sedative, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pentobarbitone page
“Pentobarbitone is a barbiturate, one of the older and heavier sedatives, and the gap between a dose that helps sleep and one that slows breathing too far is not a generous one. That is why I read this particular list with genuine concern.”

About Phellodendron
What is Phellodendron?
- Digestive complaints and diarrhea
- Inflammation and joint discomfort
- Stress and weight management (in combination products)
- Skin conditions (topical, traditional)
- Antimicrobial support
Phellodendron is a traditional Chinese medicine bark (Huang Bai) that contains berberine and other plant compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. Human evidence for most uses is limited, and it is often sold in combination with other herbs, making its individual effects hard to judge. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
