Simeprevir Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP3A4.

Here's the simple version: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear simeprevir (Olysio) out of your system. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and early human studies suggest can slow down that same enzyme. If the enzyme works slower, simeprevir may not be broken down as quickly, so more of it could build up in your blood.

With more simeprevir around, you might notice stronger side effects like a rash, itching, or extra sensitivity to sunlight (sunburn-type reactions). I want to be honest though: this concern is theoretical, based mostly on how these compounds behave, not on real-world reports with simeprevir. Still, before adding phellodendron, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so you don't risk your hepatitis C treatment.

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
