Lansoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP3A4.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 (along with another one, CYP2C19) to break down lansoprazole. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and early human studies suggest can mildly slow CYP3A4 down. If that enzyme is working slower, a bit more lansoprazole could linger in your system. In practice that might mean slightly stronger or longer effects, and possibly more of its usual mild side effects like headache, diarrhea, or stomach upset.

I don't want to overstate this. This concern is theoretical, based mostly on how berberine behaves in the lab, not real reports of people getting into trouble. Lansoprazole is also a pretty forgiving medicine. Still, if you're considering this supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Phellodendron is a traditional Chinese medicine bark (Huang Bai) that contains berberine and other plant compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. Human evidence for most uses is limited, and it is often sold in combination with other herbs, making its individual effects hard to judge. What Is Lansoprazole Used For?

Brand name: Prevacid

Lansoprazole is prescribed for a range of conditions where excess stomach acid is the problem. It treats active stomach and duodenal ulcers (sores in the stomach or upper small intestine), helps heal ulcers caused by NSAID pain relievers, and can reduce the risk of those ulcers coming back.

It's also used for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis (acid damage to the esophagus), and rare conditions where the stomach makes far too much acid — like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. When combined with antibiotics, it helps wipe out H. pylori bacteria that cause recurring ulcers.
