Simeprevir Sodium falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Chlorella interacts with.

Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.

Here's the thing to know about Olysio (simeprevir): one of its more common quirks is that it can make your skin much more sensitive to sunlight, leading to easy sunburn, redness, or rashes on areas that get sun. Chlorella has its own track record here too. In a handful of case reports, people taking chlorella developed swelling and reddish-purple spots on sun-exposed skin.

So the worry is that using both together could add up and make a sun reaction more likely or more intense. To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how each one behaves, not something proven in studies. Still, while you're on simeprevir, it's smart to use sunscreen, cover up outdoors, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding chlorella.

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
