Here's the simple version of what we're looking at with Ingrezza (valbenazine) and Phellodendron. Valbenazine can already make some people feel drowsy or tired. Phellodendron contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine seemed to have a mild calming or sedating effect. So the worry is that putting the two together might add up and leave you feeling sleepier than usual.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern. It's based on lab and animal research, not on real cases in people, so for most folks it's likely mild if it happens at all. Still, if you notice extra grogginess, dizziness, or trouble staying alert, that's worth mentioning. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than stopping anything on your own.

Here's the gist for Ingrezza (valbenazine): your body partly relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear this medicine and its active form out of your system. The berberine in phellodendron may slow that same enzyme down. If it does, valbenazine could build up a bit more than expected, which might mean stronger side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, balance trouble, or in rarer cases heart rhythm changes (QT prolongation).

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not proven in people taking these two together. Still, since valbenazine is dosed carefully, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or prescriber before adding phellodendron rather than starting it on your own.

What Is Valbenazine Used For?

Brand name: Ingrezza

Valbenazine — sold as Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle — is approved for two conditions in adults. The first is tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder that causes uncontrolled, repetitive facial or body movements, often brought on by long-term use of certain psychiatric medications. The second is chorea associated with Huntington's disease, which refers to the involuntary, dance-like jerking movements that are a hallmark of that condition.

Both Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle are approved for both of these uses.
