Why this applies to Abrocitinib

Abrocitinib falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Policosanol interacts with.

Theoretically, taking policosanol with other antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
Some clinical research shows that taking policosanol 10-50 mg daily for 7-15 days can inhibit platelet aggregation in healthy patients. Although, one clinical trial shows that taking policosanol 10 mg twice daily for 2 weeks prior to warfarin dosing does not affect warfarin pharmacokinetics or warfarin response. Furthermore, a study in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with a drug-eluting stent found that taking policosanol 40 mg plus clopidogrel and aspirin daily for 30 days modestly reduced the risk for minor bleeding events when compared with taking clopidogrel and aspirin alone. Until more is known, use with caution.

Here's something worth knowing about pairing policosanol with abrocitinib (Cibinqo). Abrocitinib itself isn't a blood thinner, but it can lower your platelet count, especially in the first few weeks of treatment. Policosanol, on the other hand, may make platelets a little 'stickier' to clump less, which is why it lands in the antiplatelet category on our list.

Put those together and the theoretical concern is a slightly higher chance of easy bruising or bleeding, like nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that take longer to stop. I'll be honest though: this is based on weak evidence, and one study actually showed less minor bleeding. The bigger flag is abrocitinib's own platelet effect. Please check in with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and mention any unusual bruising.

What is Policosanol?

Policosanol is a mix of waxy alcohols (mostly octacosanol) made from sugar cane or other plant waxes, and it is often marketed as a natural way to lower cholesterol. Early studies from Cuba showed strong cholesterol-lowering effects, but independent studies in other countries have mostly failed to confirm these benefits. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you take cholesterol medicine.

What Is Abrocitinib Used For?

Brand name: Cibinqo

Cibinqo (abrocitinib) is used to treat moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children 12 years of age and older. It is specifically for people whose eczema has not been adequately controlled with other systemic (whole-body) treatments, including biologics, or when those treatments are not a safe option.

Cibinqo is not recommended to be used at the same time as other JAK inhibitors, biologic immunomodulators, or other immunosuppressants (medicines that reduce immune system activity).
