Here is the gist: glyburide already lowers your blood sugar by nudging your pancreas to release more insulin. Some studies suggest policosanol can lower blood sugar a bit on its own. Stack the two together and the effects may add up, which means your blood sugar could dip lower than you intend.

What that looks like in real life is classic low blood sugar: shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, sudden hunger, dizziness, or feeling foggy and irritable. The evidence here is fairly modest and the risk is rated as possible, not certain, so this is a reason to pay attention, not panic. If you want to try policosanol, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep a closer eye on your home glucose readings.

Policosanol is a mix of waxy alcohols (mostly octacosanol) made from sugar cane or other plant waxes, and it is often marketed as a natural way to lower cholesterol. Early studies from Cuba showed strong cholesterol-lowering effects, but independent studies in other countries have mostly failed to confirm these benefits. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you take cholesterol medicine.

What Is Glyburide Used For?

Brand names: Diabeta, Micronase, Glynase, Glycron, Micronized, Glynase PresTab, Albert Glyburide

Glyburide tablets are used alongside diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious complication where the body produces dangerous levels of acids called ketones).

Glyburide may be used alone or combined with metformin when metformin alone is not enough. It can also be used to help transition patients who are moving from insulin or other diabetes pills to a new regimen, under a doctor's guidance.
