Here's the gist with Poria mushroom and methadone. Methadone is a strong opioid that already calms the brain and nervous system. Poria has shown mild sedative or calming effects in animal studies, so in theory stacking the two could add up and leave you more drowsy, foggy, or relaxed than methadone alone.

I want to be honest with you though: this concern comes only from lab and animal work, and it has not been seen in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The main things to watch for would be extra sleepiness, dizziness, or slowed breathing, since methadone can affect breathing on its own. Before adding Poria, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor, especially since methadone needs careful, steady dosing.

Poria mushroom (Fu Ling) is a fungus long used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, mainly as a mild diuretic and digestive and calming aid. Modern scientific evidence in humans is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven. It is generally considered well tolerated, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.

About Methadone

What Is Methadone Used For?

Methadone treats severe and persistent pain that requires daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment and cannot be managed adequately with other options. It is available in several forms for this use, including oral solution, oral tablets, oral concentrate, and injectable forms (intravenous, intramuscular, and subcutaneous). Injectable methadone is not approved for outpatient pain treatment — it is reserved for hospitalized patients unable to take oral medication.

Methadone is also used for the detoxification and maintenance treatment of opioid addiction (dependence on heroin or other morphine-like drugs). Oral forms — including tablets, dispersible tablets (such as Methadose Dispersible and DISKETS), and oral concentrates (such as Methadone Hydrochloride Intensol™, Methadose, and others) — are approved for this use. By law, methadone for opioid addiction treatment must be dispensed only by certified opioid treatment programs. Injectable methadone is not approved for outpatient addiction treatment.
