Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Sodium valproate
Sodium valproate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Poria Mushroom interacts with.
Animal research shows that poria mushroom extract has sedative properties. This interaction has not been shown in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for sodium valproate (Epilim) and Poria mushroom. Valproate already has a calming, sedating side to it, and Poria has shown mild sedative effects in animal studies. So the concern is simple: stacking the two could, in theory, add up to more drowsiness, grogginess, dizziness, or feeling foggy than valproate alone. This isn't about Poria changing how your liver handles the drug, it's just two things that can each make you sleepy pulling in the same direction.
I'll be straight with you though, this is theoretical. It's based on lab and animal work, and hasn't been shown in actual people. So I wouldn't panic. Just don't add Poria without running it past your pharmacist or doctor first, especially since valproate needs steady, careful dosing.

- Fluid retention and swelling
- Digestive complaints
- Sleep and calming support

Poria mushroom (Fu Ling) is a fungus long used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, mainly as a mild diuretic and digestive and calming aid. Modern scientific evidence in humans is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven. It is generally considered well tolerated, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
