Aripiprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Quercetin interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2D6 substrates.

In vitro research show that quercetin inhibits CYP2D6. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with quercetin and aripiprazole (Abilify). Your body relies partly on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break aripiprazole down and clear it. In test-tube studies, quercetin slows that enzyme. If that same effect happened in people, aripiprazole could clear a bit more slowly and build up, which in theory might mean stronger effects or more side effects like drowsiness, restlessness (that urge to keep moving), dizziness, or tremor.

The honest part: this is only a lab-based, theoretical concern that hasn't actually been shown in humans, and everyday food amounts of quercetin are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Before adding a high-dose quercetin supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Aripiprazole also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, concomitant use might alter the effects and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that pretreatment with quercetin increases plasma levels and prolongs the half-life of a single dose of cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), a substrate of CYP3A4. Animal research also shows that pretreatment with quercetin increases plasma levels and prolongs the half-life of losartan (Cozaar) and quetiapine (Seroquel), substrates of CYP3A4. Other laboratory research also shows that quercetin inhibits CYP3A4. However, one clinical study shows that quercetin can increase the metabolism of midazolam, a substrate of CYP3A4, and decrease serum concentrations of midazolam by about 24% in some healthy individuals, suggesting possible induction of CYP3A4.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear aripiprazole. Quercetin, in concentrated supplement doses, may tinker with that enzyme. Aripiprazole is an active drug (not a prodrug), so if quercetin slows that enzyme down, more aripiprazole can hang around. That could mean stronger effects and side effects like drowsiness, restlessness or an urge to keep moving, lightheadedness, or some shakiness.

I want to be honest though, this is mostly lab and animal data, and a couple of studies even hint quercetin might speed clearance instead. So the real-world impact is uncertain. Food amounts of quercetin almost certainly don't matter. Before starting a high-dose supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

Aripiprazole treats several mental health conditions. It is approved for schizophrenia, acute manic and mixed episodes of Bipolar I Disorder, and as an add-on to antidepressants for Major Depressive Disorder.
