Valacyclovir falls under ORGANIC ANION TRANSPORTER 1 (OAT1) SUBSTRATES — the group Quercetin interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the effects and adverse effects of OAT1 substrates.

In vitro research shows that quercetin is a strong non-competitive inhibitor of OAT1, with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values less than 10 mcM. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with valacyclovir (Valtrex) and quercetin. Once valacyclovir turns into its active form, acyclovir, your kidneys clear it out partly through a doorway called OAT1. In lab and animal studies, quercetin can block that doorway. If that happened in the body, more of the drug could hang around longer, which in theory might mean a bit more of its usual side effects like headache, nausea, or feeling tired or dizzy.

The honest part: this is theoretical. It has only been seen in test-tube research and hasn't been reported in real people. Everyday food amounts of quercetin are very unlikely to matter. If you're considering high-dose quercetin supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if your kidneys aren't perfect.

While early research is interesting for allergies, blood pressure, and inflammation, strong human evidence is limited for most uses. About Valacyclovir

What Is Valacyclovir Used For?

Brand name: Valtrex

Valacyclovir tablets are used in adults to treat cold sores (herpes labialis), genital herpes (initial and recurrent episodes), and shingles (herpes zoster). They can also be taken daily as suppressive therapy to reduce how often genital herpes outbreaks occur, and to lower the risk of passing genital herpes to a partner.

In children and adolescents, valacyclovir tablets are used to treat cold sores in those aged 12 and older, and chickenpox in those aged 2 to under 18. Valacyclovir has not been established as safe and effective for most uses in immunocompromised patients, with the exception of suppressive therapy for genital herpes in HIV-infected adults.
