Theoretically, concomitant use of quillaia with immunosuppressant drugs might decrease the effectiveness of these drugs.

Here's the gist with Tocilizumab (Actemra). This is a biologic that calms down an overactive immune system to ease joint and blood vessel inflammation. Some lab studies suggest the saponins in quillaia may do the opposite, gently nudging the immune system to be more active. In theory, that could work against what tocilizumab is trying to do and make it a little less effective, so you might notice your arthritis or other symptoms not staying as well controlled.

I want to be honest that this is purely theoretical, based on test-tube research, not real patient cases. The small amounts of quillaia used in foods and drinks are very unlikely to matter. Before using concentrated quillaia supplements, just run it by your doctor or pharmacist.

Quillaia (soap bark tree) is a plant whose bark contains foaming compounds called saponins, and it is widely used as an emulsifier in foods and drinks. As a supplement or herbal remedy its benefits are not well proven, and large amounts can be irritating or toxic, so it should be used cautiously and only as directed.

What Is Tocilizumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Actemra

Tocilizumab injection is used to treat several serious inflammatory and immune-related conditions. Actemra (tocilizumab) is indicated for moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis in adults who haven't responded well to other disease-modifying drugs, giant cell arteritis in adults, systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) to slow lung function decline, polyarticular and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis in patients 2 years and older, and severe or life-threatening cytokine release syndrome (CRS) caused by CAR T-cell therapy in adults and children 2 and older.

Actemra is also approved for hospitalized adults and children aged 2 and older with COVID-19 who are on corticosteroids and need supplemental oxygen or mechanical breathing support. Not every brand or route is approved for every use — your prescriber will choose the right form for your specific condition.
