Red Raspberry and Dalteparin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Dalteparin

Dalteparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Red Raspberry interacts with.

Theoretically, taking red raspberry leaf with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro research suggests that red raspberry leaf extract has antiplatelet activity and enhances the in vitro effects of the antiplatelet medication cangrelor. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: dalteparin (Fragmin) is already a blood thinner that lowers your blood's ability to clot. Red raspberry leaf isn't likely to change how your body processes dalteparin, but lab studies hint that the leaf may have a mild blood-thinning (antiplatelet) effect of its own. Put the two together and you could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk a little higher.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this comes only from test-tube research, and it has never actually been reported in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, watch for signs like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or any cut that's slow to stop. If you're using both, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up so they can keep an eye on you.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dalteparin page

“Dalteparin (Fragmin) is an injectable blood thinner used to prevent and treat dangerous clots, which is exactly why this list warrants real vigilance, and nearly all 218 ingredients on it thin the blood too. They are herbs and extracts with clot-inhibiting or antiplatelet effects of their own, so stacking them on dalteparin can push bl…”

About Dalteparin Injection

What Is Dalteparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fragmin

Fragmin is used to prevent clot-related problems in several situations. These include unstable angina and non-Q-wave heart attack (taken with aspirin), and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after hip or abdominal surgery or during an acute illness that severely limits movement.
