Amiodarone falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Rhubarb interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of rhubarb with potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
Some animal research suggests that anthraquinones in rhubarb might have hepatotoxic effects. Also, rhubarb use has been linked to at least 24 cases of liver injury, although details on the dose of rhubarb and duration of use in these cases is unclear.

Here's the thing to know about amiodarone: it can be tough on the liver all on its own, which is why your doctor checks your liver enzymes with regular blood tests. The concern with rhubarb root supplements is that certain compounds in them (anthraquinones like emodin and rhein) have shown possible liver-stressing effects in some animal studies, and rhubarb has been loosely linked to a handful of liver injury reports. Stacking two things that may each burden the liver is the worry here.

That said, this is a theoretical interaction based on how things work, not on solid human studies, so I don't want to alarm you. Eating rhubarb stalks in a pie is very different from taking concentrated root capsules. Before adding a rhubarb supplement, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Amiodarone Used For?

Amiodarone is prescribed for adults with serious, life-threatening heart-rhythm problems that haven't responded to other medications. Specifically, it's used for two dangerous arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats): recurrent ventricular fibrillation (a chaotic, potentially fatal heart rhythm) and recurrent ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm that causes unstable blood pressure).

Because amiodarone comes with significant risks, doctors reserve it for situations where other options haven't worked or can't be tolerated. It is not a first-choice medication — it's a last-resort tool for serious, life-threatening conditions.
