Dronedarone falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Rhubarb interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of rhubarb with potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
Some animal research suggests that anthraquinones in rhubarb might have hepatotoxic effects. Also, rhubarb use has been linked to at least 24 cases of liver injury, although details on the dose of rhubarb and duration of use in these cases is unclear.

Here's the concern with pairing rhubarb root with dronedarone (Multaq). Dronedarone already carries a warning about possible liver stress, and rare cases of serious liver injury have been reported with it. Rhubarb root contains anthraquinones that, in animal studies and a handful of human reports, have also been linked to liver problems. Putting two things that can each tax the liver together may, in theory, add up.

I want to be honest about the evidence here, though. This is theoretical, based mostly on pharmacology and animal data, not on proven cases of these two together. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and check with your doctor or pharmacist before using rhubarb supplements. Food amounts of rhubarb stalk are a different story than concentrated root extracts.

What Is Dronedarone Used For?

Brand name: Multaq

Multaq (dronedarone) tablets are used to reduce the risk of being hospitalized for atrial fibrillation (AF) — an irregular, often rapid heart rhythm. It is approved for adults who are currently in normal sinus rhythm but have a history of paroxysmal (comes and goes) or persistent atrial fibrillation.

Multaq is not appropriate for everyone with AF. It must not be used in people with permanent atrial fibrillation or in those with recently worsened heart failure requiring hospitalization — these patients face a doubled risk of death, stroke, and hospitalization if they take it.
