Red yeast rice contains varying levels of the drug lovastatin. Lovastatin can cause liver damage in some people. Some clinical research suggests that supplements containing red yeast rice might increase liver enzyme levels in some, but not all, participants. Cases of acute hepatitis have been associated with red yeast rice. Combining it with hepatotoxic drugs might further increase this risk.

Here's the thing to know about pairing red yeast rice with dronedarone (Multaq): both can be tough on the liver. Red yeast rice naturally contains lovastatin, a statin that occasionally raises liver enzymes, and dronedarone itself carries its own liver warning. Stacking two liver-stressing products may add up.

This concern is theoretical, based on how these ingredients behave rather than proven cases of harm together, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, watch for signs like unusual tiredness, belly pain on the upper right side, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. There's also overlap in muscle aches, since both dronedarone and statins can trigger them. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining these, rather than starting or stopping anything yourself.

Red yeast rice contains varying levels of the statin drug lovastatin, which is metabolized by CYP3A4. Combining red yeast rice with CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase serum levels of lovastatin from red yeast rice.

Here's the thing to know: dronedarone (Multaq) blocks a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is the very same enzyme your body uses to break down the lovastatin hiding inside red yeast rice. So if you take them together, that statin can build up higher than expected. This isn't a worry about your heart rhythm changing, it's more about getting too much of a statin effect.

What that can look like in real life is muscle aches, soreness, or weakness, and rarely some liver strain. This is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs work, not hard proof, and red yeast rice products vary a lot in strength. Still, please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

What Is Dronedarone Used For?

Brand name: Multaq

Multaq (dronedarone) tablets are used to reduce the risk of being hospitalized for atrial fibrillation (AF) — an irregular, often rapid heart rhythm. It is approved for adults who are currently in normal sinus rhythm but have a history of paroxysmal (comes and goes) or persistent atrial fibrillation.

Multaq is not appropriate for everyone with AF. It must not be used in people with permanent atrial fibrillation or in those with recently worsened heart failure requiring hospitalization — these patients face a doubled risk of death, stroke, and hospitalization if they take it.
