Valproic Acid falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Red Yeast Rice interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of liver damage.
Red yeast rice contains varying levels of the drug lovastatin. Lovastatin can cause liver damage in some people. Some clinical research suggests that supplements containing red yeast rice might increase liver enzyme levels in some, but not all, participants. Cases of acute hepatitis have been associated with red yeast rice. Combining it with hepatotoxic drugs might further increase this risk.

Here's the concern with pairing red yeast rice and valproic acid: both can be tough on the liver. Valproic acid is well known for occasionally raising liver enzymes or, less often, causing more serious liver trouble. Red yeast rice naturally contains lovastatin, a statin that can do the same thing. Stacking two liver stressors together may add up.

To be fair, this is a theoretical worry based on how these two work, not proven cases of them combined. Still, it's worth flagging. Watch for things like unusual tiredness, nausea, belly pain, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes, and report them right away. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding red yeast rice, since liver labs may need monitoring.

What Is Valproic Acid Used For?

Valproic acid capsules (brands Valproic and Valproic Acid) and valproic acid oral solution (brand Valproic Acid) are both used to treat epilepsy. Specifically, they are approved for complex partial seizures (either alone or with other seizure types) as monotherapy or add-on therapy, and for simple and complex absence seizures as sole therapy or add-on therapy.

Both forms are intended for adults and pediatric patients. Always follow your prescriber's guidance on which product and regimen is right for you.
