Amoxicillin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Red Yeast Rice interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of liver damage.
Red yeast rice contains varying levels of the drug lovastatin. Lovastatin can cause liver damage in some people. Some clinical research suggests that supplements containing red yeast rice might increase liver enzyme levels in some, but not all, participants. Cases of acute hepatitis have been associated with red yeast rice. Combining it with hepatotoxic drugs might further increase this risk.

Here's the simple version: red yeast rice naturally contains lovastatin, a statin that can occasionally stress the liver. Amoxicillin, while usually gentle, can also rarely irritate the liver in some folks. The thinking is that taking both at once might add up and slightly raise the chance of liver trouble.

I want to be straight with you, though: this concern is theoretical, based on how each one works rather than real cases of the two combined. Amoxicillin is typically a short course, so the overlap is brief. If you notice yellowing of your skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, check in with your doctor. It's always worth telling your pharmacist about the red yeast rice before starting any antibiotic.

Red yeast rice contains monacolin K, which is chemically identical to the prescription statin lovastatin, and it can lower LDL ('bad') cholesterol. Because of this, it carries the same risks as statin drugs, and the amount of active ingredient varies widely between products. Always talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have liver problems or take other medicines.

What Is Amoxicillin Used For?

Brand names: Amoxil Capsules, Trimox, Wymox, Amix, Amoram, Amoxident, Galenamox, Rimoxallin, Amoxil Injection

Amoxicillin treats bacterial infections in both adults and children, including ear, nose, and throat infections; lower respiratory tract infections; skin and skin structure infections; and genitourinary tract infections.

In adults only, amoxicillin is also used — always combined with other medications — to eradicate Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), the bacteria behind duodenal ulcers. Getting rid of H. pylori has been shown to reduce the chance of those ulcers coming back. It is only effective against bacteria that are susceptible to it and will not work against viral infections like the common cold or flu.
