Why this applies to Beclomethasone

Beclomethasone falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Sage interacts with.

Theoretically, sage might increase levels of drugs transported by P-glycoprotein.
In vitro research suggests that common sage (Salvia officinalis) can inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for sage and your beclomethasone inhaler (Beclovent, Vanceril). On paper, sage might block a transport protein called P-glycoprotein, which helps move certain drugs around and out of the body. If that protein is slowed, levels of a drug it handles could theoretically creep up. With more steroid hanging around, you might see a touch more of the usual side effects, like a hoarse voice, throat irritation, or oral thrush (a white, sore mouth from yeast).

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is only seen in lab dishes, not in real people, and your inhaler delivers a small, targeted dose to the lungs. Cooking with sage almost certainly won't matter. If you're using concentrated sage extracts or the essential oil regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Beclomethasone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, sage might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro evidence suggests that aqueous extracts of sage can inhibit CYP3A4. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for your asthma inhaler. Beclomethasone is processed by an enzyme in your body called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, sage appears to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, a bit more beclomethasone could linger in your system, which in theory might nudge up the usual inhaled-steroid side effects like a hoarse voice, mouth or throat irritation, or thrush (a white coating in the mouth).

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is only lab evidence, and it has never actually been reported in people. Cooking with sage is very unlikely to matter at all. If you're using concentrated sage extracts or the essential oil regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

Sage is a common kitchen herb that is generally safe in food amounts and is traditionally used for sore throats, digestion, sweating, and memory. Some early research is encouraging for sore throat and menopausal hot flashes, but most uses are not well proven. Concentrated extracts and the essential oil should be used carefully because high doses contain a compound called thujone, which can be harmful.

What Is Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Beclovent, Vanceril

Beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol (brand: Qvar Redihaler) is used for the ongoing, daily management of asthma in adults and children 5 years of age and older. It is a preventive (maintenance) therapy — not a rescue inhaler — meaning it helps control asthma over time rather than treating sudden symptoms.

Important: Qvar Redihaler is not for the relief of sudden asthma attacks or acute bronchospasm. Always keep a separate fast-acting (rescue) inhaler on hand for those moments.
