Vancomycin Hydrochloride falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Soy interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotics may decrease the activity of soy isoflavones.
Intestinal bacteria are responsible in part for converting soy isoflavones into their active forms. Antibiotics may decrease the amount of intestinal bacteria and decrease its ability to convert isoflavones.

Here's a nice twist on this one: it's not your vancomycin that gets affected, it's the soy. Your gut bacteria help turn soy isoflavones into their more active forms. Since vancomycin is an antibiotic, it can knock down some of those bacteria, which may leave you getting a little less benefit from the soy you eat or take.

The good news is this is mostly a theoretical concern based on lab work, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Your vancomycin will still work the same, and it won't cause more side effects because of soy. If you're taking concentrated soy isoflavone supplements for a specific reason, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can weigh in.

About Vancomycin

What Is Vancomycin Used For?

Brand name: Firvanq

Vancomycin is used to fight serious bacterial infections caused by certain hard-to-treat bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). When given intravenously (by IV), it treats conditions like septicemia (a serious bloodstream infection), infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves), skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and lower respiratory tract infections.

When taken by mouth — as capsules or oral solution (brands include Vancocin and Firvanq) — vancomycin treats Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (C. diff) and staphylococcal enterocolitis (a gut infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus). It's important to know that the oral form does not work for bloodstream or other serious infections, and the IV form does not work for C. diff or gut infections — each route has its own specific uses.
