Demeclocycline falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Soy interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotics may decrease the activity of soy isoflavones.
Intestinal bacteria are responsible in part for converting soy isoflavones into their active forms. Antibiotics may decrease the amount of intestinal bacteria and decrease its ability to convert isoflavones.

Here's something a little different from most drug interactions: this one runs the other way. Demeclocycline (Declomycin) doesn't get weakened by soy. Instead, soy may get weakened by the antibiotic. Your gut bacteria help turn soy isoflavones into their more active forms, and an antibiotic like demeclocycline can temporarily knock back some of those helpful bacteria. So while you're on it, any health benefit you're hoping to get from soy could be a bit blunted.

The good news: this is a minor, mostly theoretical concern based on lab work, not strong human studies. Your infection will still be treated just fine. Eating soy foods normally is safe here. If you take concentrated soy isoflavone supplements, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Demeclocycline

What Is Demeclocycline Used For?

Brand name: Declomycin

Demeclocycline Hydrochloride tablets are used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. These include Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, Q fever, tick fevers, respiratory tract infections (including those caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae), cholera, plague, tularemia, brucellosis, relapsing fever, chancroid, and sexually transmitted infections such as lymphogranuloma venereum, nongonococcal urethritis, and gonorrhea (when penicillin cannot be used).

It is also used for certain skin and skin structure infections, bartonellosis, granuloma inguinale, actinomycosis, listeriosis, anthrax (when penicillin is contraindicated), and as an adjunct in acute intestinal amebiasis. In severe acne, it may be used as part of combination therapy. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to it.
