Nitrofurantoin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Soy interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotics may decrease the activity of soy isoflavones.
Intestinal bacteria are responsible in part for converting soy isoflavones into their active forms. Antibiotics may decrease the amount of intestinal bacteria and decrease its ability to convert isoflavones.

Here's the good news: this interaction runs in one direction, and it's a gentle one. Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin) doesn't get weaker or stronger because of soy. Instead, it may slightly dial back what soy does for you. Your gut bacteria help turn soy isoflavones into their active forms, and since nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic, it can temporarily shift those bacteria. The thinking is you might get a little less benefit from the soy itself.

This is mostly theory, based on lab work rather than real patients, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Your UTI treatment still works exactly as it should. If you take concentrated soy isoflavone supplements for a specific reason, just mention it to your pharmacist, but eating soy foods alongside your antibiotic is fine.

About Nitrofurantoin

What Is Nitrofurantoin Used For?

Brand names: Macrodantin, Furadantin, Furatoin, Macrobid

Nitrofurantoin is used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by certain susceptible bacteria. The capsule forms (including Macrodantin) are indicated for UTIs due to susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, and certain strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species. Nitrofurantoin oral suspension (Furadantin) is indicated for adults and children 1 month of age and older for the same types of UTIs.

Nitrofurantoin is not used for kidney infections (pyelonephritis) or infections of the tissue around the kidney (perinephric abscesses). Because it works primarily in the urine and does not spread widely through body tissues, it may not fully clear the infection in some patients, and the UTI may return after treatment.
