Doxycycline Hyclate falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Soy interacts with.

Intestinal bacteria are responsible in part for converting soy isoflavones into their active forms. Antibiotics may decrease the amount of intestinal bacteria and decrease its ability to convert isoflavones.

Here's the thing to know about pairing soy with doxycycline: this one mostly works in the other direction. Your gut bacteria help turn soy isoflavones into their more active forms. Since doxycycline is an antibiotic, it can temporarily knock down some of those helpful gut bacteria, which in theory may make the soy isoflavones a bit less active. So this is really about soy possibly doing less for you, not about your antibiotic becoming dangerous.

I want to be honest that this is theoretical and based only on lab-type evidence, so it's rated minor. Eating tofu, edamame, or soymilk while finishing your doxycycline isn't something to lose sleep over. One real tip: doxycycline can bind to calcium, so don't take it at the same moment as calcium-fortified soymilk. If you're unsure about timing, ask your pharmacist.

What Is Doxycycline Used For?

Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline family of antibiotics. It's prescribed for many types of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tick-borne illnesses like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and eye infections. It's also used to help prevent malaria and, in some cases, as a helper treatment for severe acne.

In situations where penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used — due to allergy, for example — doxycycline can step in as an alternative. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.
