It is one of seven major-rated entries among the 166 supplement and herbal ingredients on file, a list I treat with real caution. Heavy alcohol adds liver strain, and kidney-stressing herbs like Siberian cocklebur also rate major.
Most of the 139 moderate interactions are milder versions of the same themes, with 20 minor entries at the low end. Calcium binds doxycycline in the gut, so take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after a calcium supplement. Probiotics can be killed off if swallowed with the dose. And 20 photosensitizing ingredients, bergamot oil among them, add to the sun sensitivity doxycycline already causes, so cover up outdoors while taking both.
