Soy + Clomipramine
Clomipramine brand names: Anafranil, Anafranil SR.
Soy has a minor interaction with Clomipramine. Soy might modestly induce CYP2C9 enzymes.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Clomipramine
Clomipramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Soy interacts with.
In vitro research suggests that an unhydrolyzed soy extract might induce CYP2C9. However, the significance of this interaction is likely minimal. In healthy females taking a specific extract of soy (Genistein Soy Complex, Source Naturals), blood levels of losartan, a CYP2C9 substrate, were not significantly affected.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the short version: this one is mostly theoretical. Soy isoflavones (genistein and daidzein) have been shown in lab dishes to slightly speed up an enzyme called CYP2C9. In a real study of women taking a soy supplement, blood levels of another CYP2C9 drug barely budged, so the worry stays small.
Clomipramine is an active medicine (not a prodrug), and it actually leans more on other liver enzymes than on CYP2C9. So even if soy nudged this pathway, you'd be unlikely to notice a real change in how it works for your OCD, or in side effects like dry mouth, drowsiness, or constipation. Food-amount soy is no concern. If you're considering concentrated soy isoflavone capsules, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clomipramine page
“A tricyclic antidepressant used mostly for OCD, clomipramine (Anafranil) is unforgiving of shifts in its blood level, which is why its 236 supplement interactions deserve genuine wariness. Most of the list involves metabolism: herbs that speed up or slow down the liver enzymes handling clomipramine can drag its level too low or push it…”

About Soy
What is Soy?
- Menopause symptoms (hot flashes)
- Heart and cholesterol health
- Bone health
- Plant-based protein source
- General nutrition
Soy is a nutritious bean that is a staple food and a popular source of plant protein and isoflavones. Eating soy foods as part of a balanced diet is generally considered safe for most people, and there is moderate evidence it may modestly help cholesterol and some menopause symptoms, though results vary. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated soy isoflavone supplements, especially if you have a history of hormone-sensitive conditions.

Clomipramine Is Linked to Lower Levels of 3 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Clomipramine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Soy — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
