Soy + Methyclothiazide
Methyclothiazide brand names: Enduron, Aquatensen.
Methyclothiazide falls into 2 drug categories that Soy can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically soy protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Soy interacts with whole categories of medication. Methyclothiazide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Soy in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Methyclothiazide
Methyclothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Soy interacts with.
Although some contradictory research exists, most clinical evidence suggests that consuming soy protein modestly reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure in individuals with prehypertension or hypertension.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: methyclothiazide is a water pill that lowers your blood pressure, and soy protein can gently nudge blood pressure down too. Put the two together and those effects can stack up, so your pressure could drop a little more than expected. This isn't about soy changing how your body processes the drug. It's just two things pushing in the same direction.
If your numbers run too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, or wobbly when you stand up. For most folks, eating soy foods like tofu or edamame in a normal diet is a minor concern. Concentrated soy isoflavone supplements are where I'd pay closer attention. Don't change anything on your own. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads up so they can keep an eye on your readings.

DIURETIC DRUGS
2 of 2Methyclothiazide also falls under DIURETIC DRUGS.
Animal research suggests that genistein, a soy isoflavone, increases diuresis within 6 hours of subcutaneous administration in rats. The effects seem to be similar to those of furosemide. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist if you take a soy supplement alongside your methyclothiazide (Enduron). Methyclothiazide is a water pill, so its whole job is to help your body push out extra salt and fluid through your urine. The concern on file is purely theoretical: in rat studies, the soy isoflavone genistein had its own mild fluid-removing effect. The thought is that, in theory, soy could add a little to what your diuretic already does.
That said, this has never been shown in people, and ordinary soy foods like tofu or edamame are very unlikely to matter. If you use concentrated soy isoflavone capsules, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist, especially if you notice extra dizziness, lightheadedness, or unusual urination. Don't change anything on your own.

About Soy
What is Soy?
- Menopause symptoms (hot flashes)
- Heart and cholesterol health
- Bone health
- Plant-based protein source
- General nutrition
Soy is a nutritious bean that is a staple food and a popular source of plant protein and isoflavones. Eating soy foods as part of a balanced diet is generally considered safe for most people, and there is moderate evidence it may modestly help cholesterol and some menopause symptoms, though results vary. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated soy isoflavone supplements, especially if you have a history of hormone-sensitive conditions.
About Methyclothiazide
What Is Methyclothiazide Used For?
Brand names: Enduron, Aquatensen
-
Methyclothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. Methyclothiazide is also used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat edema caused by using certain medications including estrogen and corticosteroids. Methyclothiazide is in a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills'). It works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.
-
High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
