Strawberry and Danaparoid

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Danaparoid

Danaparoid falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Strawberry interacts with.

In vitro and animal research suggests that strawberry extract can inhibit platelet aggregation due to its phenolic content. Theoretically, strawberry might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Danaparoid (Orgaran) is a blood thinner that helps prevent dangerous clots. The concern here is simple addition: lab and animal studies hint that the plant compounds in strawberries may make platelets a little less sticky. Stacked on top of danaparoid, the theory is that your blood could become slightly slower to clot, which might raise the chance of bleeding or bruising.

Here's the honest part though: this is only theoretical, based on test tube and animal data, not real patients. Eating strawberries as food is very unlikely to cause a problem. Concentrated strawberry extract supplements are the bigger question mark. Watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any strawberry supplement.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Danaparoid page

“Danshen, a Chinese herb sold for heart and circulation, is where I would start with danaparoid (Orgaran), an injectable blood thinner used to prevent and treat dangerous clots. Nearly everything here, 202 of the 218 ingredients on file, carries some blood-thinning or antiplatelet activity of its own, and stacking that on top of an anti…”
