Metolazone falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Strophanthus interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of potassium-depleting diuretics and strophanthus can increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion. Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's the practical concern with this pairing. Metolazone is a 'water pill' that makes you lose both fluid and potassium through your urine. Strophanthus contains cardiac glycosides (heart-acting compounds much like digoxin), and these become more dangerous when your potassium runs low. So it isn't that Metolazone changes how Strophanthus is broken down. Instead, by lowering your potassium, it can make the heart more sensitive to Strophanthus and raise the risk of toxicity, such as an irregular or unsafe heartbeat, nausea, or dizziness.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how these substances work, not hard clinical proof. Still, Strophanthus is potent and not a casual supplement. Please don't combine them on your own. Check with your doctor or pharmacist first, and keep an eye on your potassium levels.

What Is Metolazone Used For?

Brand names: Diulo, Zaroxolyn, Mykrox

Metolazone tablets are used to treat edema (excess fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure or kidney diseases — including nephrotic syndrome and conditions with reduced kidney function. They are also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), either alone or alongside other blood pressure medications.

Metolazone tablets may also be used during pregnancy when edema is caused by a medical condition rather than normal pregnancy changes — but routine use in otherwise healthy pregnant women is not appropriate.
