Theoretically, swallowroot might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that swallowroot inhibits platelet aggregation.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Dalteparin is an injectable blood thinner that lowers your blood's ability to clot. The concern here is simple addition: lab studies suggest Swallowroot can keep platelets (the cells that help form clots) from sticking together. Stack that on top of dalteparin, and in theory you could tip the scales toward easier bleeding, things like bruising more than usual, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or pink-tinged urine.

That said, this is very weak evidence, coming only from test-tube research, not real people. Small culinary amounts in a pickle or cooling drink are unlikely to matter much. Concentrated supplement doses are a bigger question mark. Since dalteparin already carries real bleeding risk, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Swallowroot, and never adjust your dalteparin on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dalteparin page

“Dalteparin (Fragmin) is an injectable blood thinner used to prevent and treat dangerous clots, which is exactly why this list warrants real vigilance, and nearly all 218 ingredients on it thin the blood too. They are herbs and extracts with clot-inhibiting or antiplatelet effects of their own, so stacking them on dalteparin can push bl…”

About Swallowroot

What is Swallowroot?

  • Digestive complaints
  • General tonic and appetite stimulant
  • Blood purifier in folk medicine
  • Antimicrobial and food preservative
  • Cooling drink in hot weather

Swallowroot (Decalepis hamiltonii) is a root used in South Indian folk medicine and as a food flavoring, often pickled or made into a cooling drink. Modern scientific evidence for its health benefits in people is very limited, resting mostly on laboratory and animal studies, so its effectiveness is not proven. If you are considering it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

About Dalteparin Injection

What Is Dalteparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fragmin

Fragmin is used to prevent clot-related problems in several situations. These include unstable angina and non-Q-wave heart attack (taken with aspirin), and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after hip or abdominal surgery or during an acute illness that severely limits movement.

It is also used to treat symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE, a clot in a vein) and lower the chance it comes back. This applies to adults with cancer and to children from birth (gestational age at least 35 weeks). Fragmin is not indicated for the acute treatment of VTE.
