ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Clopidogrel
Clopidogrel falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Swallowroot interacts with.
In vitro research shows that swallowroot inhibits platelet aggregation.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: Clopidogrel (Plavix) already works by keeping your platelets from clumping together, which is exactly how it lowers your risk of clots after a stroke, heart attack, or stent. In lab studies, Swallowroot seems to do a similar thing, gently slowing platelets down on its own. So the worry is that the two stacked together could push your blood a little too far toward 'thin,' raising the chance of bruising easily, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bleeding that's slow to stop.
I'll be honest with you though, this is based only on test-tube and animal research, not on real people, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Food or pickled amounts are unlikely to matter much. Before adding a concentrated Swallowroot supplement, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clopidogrel page
“Clopidogrel (Plavix) keeps platelets from sticking together after a stent, heart attack, or stroke, which makes this a list to take carefully. Of the 309 supplements and herbs on file, 202 carry blood-thinning or antiplatelet activity of their own and can stack bleeding risk on top of the drug's, while most of the rest change how the l…”

About Swallowroot
What is Swallowroot?
- Digestive complaints
- General tonic and appetite stimulant
- Blood purifier in folk medicine
- Antimicrobial and food preservative
- Cooling drink in hot weather
Swallowroot (Decalepis hamiltonii) is a root used in South Indian folk medicine and as a food flavoring, often pickled or made into a cooling drink. Modern scientific evidence for its health benefits in people is very limited, resting mostly on laboratory and animal studies, so its effectiveness is not proven. If you are considering it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
About Clopidogrel
What Is Clopidogrel Used For?
Brand name: Plavix
Clopidogrel is used to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in people whose arteries are already affected by disease.
Its supported uses are acute coronary syndrome (including unstable angina, non-ST-elevation heart attack and ST-elevation heart attack), a recent heart attack, a recent stroke, and established peripheral arterial disease (narrowed arteries, usually in the legs). For acute coronary syndrome, some product labels say it should be used together with aspirin.
