Here's the simple version. Defibrotide is a powerful clot-preventing medicine given by IV in the hospital, usually to very sick patients recovering from a stem-cell transplant. Lab studies suggest Swallowroot may keep platelets (the tiny cells that help blood clot) from sticking together. Stack that on top of a drug already working to stop clots, and the worry is simple: more bleeding.

That could look like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or more serious internal bleeding. Now the honest part: this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's theoretical. Also, defibrotide is hospital-only, where your team watches you closely. Still, mention any supplement to your transplant team before or during treatment so they can decide what's safe.

Modern scientific evidence for its health benefits in people is very limited, resting mostly on laboratory and animal studies, so its effectiveness is not proven. What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Defitelio

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
