Here's the simple picture: defibrotide (Defitelio) is a medicine that helps stop unwanted blood clots from forming inside the liver. Because of that job, it already lowers your blood's ability to clot. Flaxseed oil, in concentrated supplement form, may have a mild blood-thinning effect of its own by making platelets a little less sticky. Put the two together and you could, in theory, tip the balance toward easier bruising or bleeding, things like nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or blood that takes longer to stop.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's mostly based on how these things work, not on strong studies. Also, defibrotide is given in a hospital setting for a serious condition, so your medical team is watching you closely. Still, please tell your doctor or pharmacist about any flaxseed oil before or during treatment, and don't start or stop anything on your own.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Defitelio

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
