Flaxseed Oil and Chlorthalidone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Chlorthalidone

Chlorthalidone falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Flaxseed Oil interacts with.

Theoretically, combining flaxseed oil with other antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical evidence suggests that long-term consumption of flaxseed oil can modestly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure, while other clinical research shows no effect.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Chlorthalidone is a water pill that lowers your blood pressure by helping your body shed extra salt and water. Flaxseed oil, over time, may nudge blood pressure down a little on its own, though the research is honestly mixed (some studies show a small drop, others show nothing).

So the concern is just additive: two things gently pushing blood pressure in the same direction. If your pressure dips too low, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, or wobbly when you stand up. This is a theoretical worry based on how they work, not a strong, proven problem, and food amounts of flax are unlikely to matter. Still, if you take both, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on how you feel.
