Flaxseed Oil and Lisinopril

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Lisinopril

Lisinopril falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Flaxseed Oil interacts with.

Theoretically, combining flaxseed oil with other antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical evidence suggests that long-term consumption of flaxseed oil can modestly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure, while other clinical research shows no effect.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: lisinopril already lowers your blood pressure, and flaxseed oil might nudge it down a little more. Put them together and the two effects could add up. If your pressure dips too low, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or a bit unsteady when you stand up quickly.

I want to be honest about how solid this is, though. This is mostly a theoretical concern based on how the two work, and the research is genuinely mixed. Some studies show flaxseed oil modestly lowering blood pressure, others show no real effect. Most people do fine combining them. Just check in with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if your blood pressure already runs low or you notice new dizziness.

About Lisinopril

What Is Lisinopril Used For?

Brand names: Zestril, Prinivil, Qbrelis

Lisinopril treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older, and can be used alone or alongside other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. The tablet combination product containing lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide is specifically indicated for high blood pressure.

Lisinopril is also used as an add-on therapy to reduce signs and symptoms of systolic heart failure, and to reduce the risk of death in people who are hemodynamically stable (have reasonably stable circulation) within 24 hours of an acute heart attack (acute myocardial infarction).
