Swallowroot and Papaverine

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Papaverine and Swallowroot in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Papaverine

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Papaverine is filed under 2 classifications — vasodilators, oral drugs. Swallowroot has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate) — and none of Papaverine’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Papaverine. Read the label on DailyMed › Swallowroot’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Swallowroot side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Swallowroot has no side effects.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Papaverine page

“Papaverine relaxes blood vessels to improve blood flow, and its interaction list warrants genuine care, since 2 of the 20 entries are rated major. Most of the list concerns absorption, fibers and gums that can change how much of an oral dose reaches your bloodstream, but the two majors come first.”

About Swallowroot

What is Swallowroot?

  • Digestive complaints
  • General tonic and appetite stimulant
  • Blood purifier in folk medicine
  • Antimicrobial and food preservative
  • Cooling drink in hot weather

Swallowroot (Decalepis hamiltonii) is a root used in South Indian folk medicine and as a food flavoring, often pickled or made into a cooling drink. Modern scientific evidence for its health benefits in people is very limited, resting mostly on laboratory and animal studies, so its effectiveness is not proven. If you are considering it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Swallowroot is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Swallowroot record says about it on its own.

Swallowroot: dosing

There is no established standardized dose for Swallowroot. Traditional use varies widely depending on whether it is taken as a pickle, a drink, or a powder. If you choose to use a commercial product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed them.

About Papaverine

What Is Papaverine Used For?

Brand names: Pavabid, Para Time, P 200, Pavabid HP

Papaverine Hydrochloride Injection is used when smooth muscle goes into spasm — meaning it contracts abnormally and needs to be relaxed. It is given for vascular (blood vessel) spasms that can occur with conditions like acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), angina pectoris (chest pain from reduced blood flow to the heart), and peripheral or pulmonary embolism (blockages in the limb or lung arteries).

It is also used for peripheral vascular disease where spasm plays a role, certain cerebral angiospastic states (blood vessel spasms in the brain), and visceral spasm — meaning painful cramping in internal organs such as the ureter, gallbladder (biliary colic), or intestines (gastrointestinal colic).
