Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: this combo product (Synalgos DC) contains aspirin, and a small study suggests tamarind may boost how much aspirin your body absorbs. In plain terms, more aspirin can reach your bloodstream, which could nudge up its effects and its side effects. With aspirin, that usually means a higher chance of stomach upset, heartburn, or an easier tendency to bruise or bleed. The caffeine and dihydrocodeine parts aren't really the concern here.

This is mostly theoretical, and it was seen with tamarind cooked into porridge, not just a sprinkle of the fruit in cooking. So a tangy meal now and then is unlikely to be a problem. If you regularly take concentrated tamarind supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Tamarind

What is Tamarind?

  • Constipation and digestive upset
  • Culinary flavoring
  • Fever and sore throat
  • Antioxidant support
  • Traditional wound or skin care

Tamarind is a tangy tropical fruit widely used in cooking and traditional medicine, mainly for digestion and as a mild laxative. While it is a nutritious food, strong human evidence for most of its medicinal claims is limited, so use it mainly as a food and talk to your pharmacist before using concentrated supplements.
