Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Lyumjev (insulin lispro-aabc) is a fast-acting mealtime insulin that lowers your blood sugar. Here's the idea behind this interaction: in animal studies, concentrated tamarind seed extract appeared to nudge fasting blood sugar a little lower on its own. If that effect carries over to people, it could add to what your insulin is already doing, and the worry is your sugar dipping too low.

I want to be honest that this is theoretical and based only on lab and animal work, not human studies, so it may not amount to much in real life. Eating tamarind as a food in normal cooking amounts is very unlikely to be a problem. Concentrated seed-extract supplements are the bigger question mark. If you do start one, watch for low blood sugar signs (shakiness, sweating, confusion) and check your readings more often. Loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding it, since your insulin dose might need a tweak.

  • Culinary flavoring
  • Fever and sore throat
  • Antioxidant support
  • Traditional wound or skin care

Tamarind is a tangy tropical fruit widely used in cooking and traditional medicine, mainly for digestion and as a mild laxative. While it is a nutritious food, strong human evidence for most of its medicinal claims is limited, so use it mainly as a food and talk to your pharmacist before using concentrated supplements.
