Here's the gist for this pairing: it's the thyroid extract that may get short-changed, not your balsalazide. When you take an oral thyroid product alongside other medicines and food, those can bind up the thyroid hormone in your gut and lower how much you absorb. If that happens, you might notice your old hypothyroid symptoms creeping back, like fatigue, feeling cold, or sluggishness.

This is a minor, well-documented timing issue rather than a dangerous reaction. Balsalazide itself still gets converted to mesalamine in your colon and keeps working on your ulcerative colitis. A simple fix many people use is spacing the two doses apart. Since thyroid extract amounts aren't standardized, please confirm the right timing and product with your doctor or pharmacist.

What Is Balsalazide Used For?

Brand names: Colazal, Giazo

Balsalazide disodium capsules (sold as Balsalazide Disodium and Colazal) are used to treat mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis — a condition where the lining of the colon becomes inflamed and causes symptoms like diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and abdominal pain. This use is approved for adults and for children ages 5 through 17.

The established treatment period is up to 8 weeks in children (ages 5–17) and up to 12 weeks in adults. Safety and effectiveness beyond those time frames have not been established in clinical trials.
