Cloxacillin Sodium falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the simple version: this interaction is really about your thyroid hormone, not so much about the antibiotic. When you take thyroid extract and cloxacillin at the same time, having the antibiotic (and the food or water you swallow it with) in your stomach can get in the way of how well your body absorbs the thyroid hormone. Over time that could mean you're getting a bit less thyroid effect than you expect.

The good news is this is a minor, easily managed timing issue. Cloxacillin itself isn't a prodrug, and its job of fighting your infection shouldn't change. The usual fix is just spacing them out: take your thyroid product on an empty stomach, ideally 30 to 60 minutes before other pills or food. Since over-the-counter thyroid extract is unpredictable to begin with, please run your routine by your pharmacist or doctor.
