Eliglustat falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs in one direction: your other oral medicines and even foods can lower how much thyroid hormone your body absorbs from the extract. Things like calcium, iron, antacids, or high-fiber meals can grab onto thyroid hormone in your gut so less gets in. That is why prescription thyroid pills are taken on an empty stomach, well before food and other drugs.

Eliglustat (Cerdelga) itself is not really the troublemaker in this pairing, and it is not a prodrug. To keep your thyroid dose working steadily, simply separate the two by a few hours rather than swallowing them at the same moment. Since thyroid extract strength is unpredictable and Cerdelga has its own important interactions, please confirm your exact timing and doses with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Eliglustat

What Is Eliglustat Used For?

Brand name: Cerdelga

Cerdelga (eliglustat) is used for the long-term treatment of Gaucher disease type 1 in adults. Gaucher disease type 1 is a genetic condition in which a fatty substance called glucosylceramide builds up in organs like the liver, spleen, and bone marrow, causing them to enlarge and leading to problems like anemia and low platelet counts.

Cerdelga is only appropriate for adults whose bodies process the drug in a predictable way — specifically those identified as CYP2D6 extensive metabolizers (EMs), intermediate metabolizers (IMs), or poor metabolizers (PMs) by an FDA-cleared genetic test. People who are CYP2D6 ultra-rapid metabolizers may not reach drug levels high enough to benefit, and Cerdelga is not recommended for them.
