Pitolisant Hydrochloride falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs the other way from what you might expect. It is not that your pitolisant (Wakix) changes the thyroid extract, but that pitolisant itself can be the thing that gets in the way of thyroid hormone absorbing properly. Thyroid hormone is fussy. It likes an empty stomach, and other pills taken at the same time can bind to it and keep some of it from being absorbed.

If absorption drops, you may not get the full thyroid effect, which can mean lingering tiredness, sluggishness, or feeling cold. This is a minor issue and easy to manage by spacing them out. A common trick is taking your thyroid product on an empty stomach and waiting at least 30 to 60 minutes before your pitolisant or breakfast. Since over-the-counter thyroid extract is unpredictable anyway, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist on timing and whether prescription thyroid medicine fits you better.

About Pitolisant

What Is Pitolisant Used For?

Brand name: Wakix

Wakix (pitolisant) is used to treat two hallmark problems of narcolepsy: excessive daytime sleepiness (feeling overwhelmingly tired and unable to stay awake during the day) and cataplexy (sudden episodes of muscle weakness or loss of muscle control, often triggered by emotion). It is approved for adults and children 6 years of age and older.

Both uses are specific to Wakix tablets taken by mouth. The drug is not approved for sleepiness or cataplexy caused by conditions other than narcolepsy.
