Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs in one direction: your migraine medicine, rizatriptan, can get in the way of the thyroid extract being absorbed properly, not the other way around. Thyroid hormones are picky about their company in the stomach, and taking other oral pills or food too close together can lower how much thyroid hormone your body actually takes in.

This is a minor issue and easy to manage. The simplest fix is spacing them out: take your thyroid product on an empty stomach and use your rizatriptan for a migraine when you need it, ideally not at the exact same moment. Rizatriptan isn't an everyday scheduled drug, so most days this won't overlap. Since thyroid extract dosing is unpredictable, please let your doctor or pharmacist guide your thyroid treatment.

What Is Rizatriptan Used For?

Brand name: Rizafilm

Rizatriptan treats migraine headaches — with or without aura — when they occur. It is approved for adults and for children and teens ages 6 to 17. It is available as a regular tablet (Maxalt, Rizatriptan, Rizatriptan Benzoate), an orally disintegrating tablet (Maxalt, Maxalt-MLT, Rizatriptan Benzoate ODT), and a dissolving oral film placed on the tongue (Rizafilm).

Rizatriptan is for stopping a migraine once it starts — it is not meant to prevent migraines from happening, and it is not approved for cluster headaches. It should only be used after a doctor has confirmed a migraine diagnosis.
