Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the good news: this is a low-stakes pairing. When you take a thyroid extract (which contains real T3 and T4), other things in your stomach can grab onto that hormone and keep it from being fully absorbed. The interaction on file is really about timing in the gut, not a dangerous reaction.

Simethicone (Mylicon, Gas-X type products) simply breaks up gas bubbles and isn't absorbed into your body, so it doesn't change how your thyroid hormone works in any major way. But many simethicone products are combined with antacids like calcium, magnesium, or aluminum, and those minerals can bind thyroid hormone and lower how much you absorb. To be safe, separate them by at least 4 hours, and check with your pharmacist about your exact product.

Simethicone relieves the uncomfortable pressure, bloating, and full or stuffed feeling that comes from trapped gas. Gas can build up after eating certain foods or from swallowing air.
