Alitretinoin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Tragacanth interacts with.

Theoretically, tragacanth might alter absorption of oral drugs.
Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the thing worth noting: the Panretin (alitretinoin) most people use for Kaposi's sarcoma is actually a gel you rub on your skin, not a pill you swallow. This particular concern is about oral medicines, so if you're using the topical gel, swallowing tragacanth shouldn't bump into it at all.

That said, the worry here is gentle and only theoretical. Tragacanth's thick, gel-forming fiber could, in principle, soak up an oral medicine in your gut and change how much gets absorbed (a little more, a little less, or no change). If you ever take alitretinoin by mouth, a simple fix is spacing them out: take your medicine first, then the tragacanth about 30 to 60 minutes later. When in doubt, run it by your pharmacist.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Alitretinoin Used For?

Brand name: Panretin

Panretin Gel is approved to treat cutaneous lesions — visible skin sores — in adults who have AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), a cancer that causes abnormal tissue to grow in the skin.

Panretin Gel is applied directly to the affected skin spots. It is not for use when the disease has spread widely enough to need systemic (whole-body) treatment — for example, when there are more than 10 new lesions in a month, or when the lungs, lymph nodes, or internal organs are involved.
