Here's the simple version: tragacanth is a thick, gel-forming fiber. When you swallow it close to a pill like your dextroamphetamine, that slippery gel can grab onto the medicine in your stomach and gut. In theory, this could change how much actually gets absorbed into your bloodstream. It might slightly lower the amount that gets in (so your ADHD or narcolepsy symptoms aren't as well controlled), or in some cases let in a bit more.

Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber gums behave, not something proven with dextroamphetamine specifically. An easy fix is to space them out: take your dextroamphetamine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any tragacanth. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can help you sort out the timing.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Dextroamphetamine Used For?

Brand name: Dexedrine

Dextroamphetamine treats two conditions: ADHD and narcolepsy (a sleep disorder causing uncontrollable daytime sleepiness). It is available in multiple forms — tablets, extended-release capsules, oral solution, and a skin patch — and the approved age ranges vary by product.

Oral tablets (Zenzedi, generic) and oral solutions (Procentra, generic) are approved for ADHD in children as young as 3 years old and for narcolepsy. Extended-release capsules (Dexedrine, generic) are approved for ADHD in children ages 6 to 16 and for narcolepsy. Xelstrym, the transdermal patch, is approved only for ADHD — in adults and children ages 6 and older — and is not indicated for narcolepsy.
