Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the thing to know about taking tragacanth alongside your dipyridamole (Persantine): tragacanth is mostly a gummy, water-loving fiber that swells into a gel in your gut. That gel can grab onto pills sitting in your stomach and intestines, which may slightly slow or change how much dipyridamole gets absorbed. This isn't based on real patient studies, it's a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, so I don't want you to lose sleep over it.

Since dipyridamole is helping prevent blood clots after a valve replacement, you don't want its absorption thrown off in either direction. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your dipyridamole first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. Food amounts are unlikely to matter much, but please run any supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Dipyridamole Used For?

Brand names: Persantine, Dipyridamole, Persantin, Persantin Injection, Persantin Retard

Dipyridamole tablets are used alongside warfarin (a blood thinner) to help prevent dangerous blood clots from forming after cardiac valve replacement surgery. It is not used alone for this purpose — it works as an add-on to anticoagulant therapy.

Dipyridamole Injection is used as an alternative to exercise during thallium myocardial perfusion imaging — a type of heart scan that checks blood flow through the coronary arteries. It is given to patients who are unable to exercise adequately for the test.
