Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: tragacanth is a gummy fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. When you take it close to your doxazosin (Cardura) dose, that gel could trap some of the pill and change how much actually gets absorbed. It might lower the amount that reaches your blood, or in some cases bump it up a bit. This is only a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not something proven in real patients, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Still, with a blood pressure and prostate medicine, steady absorption matters. Too little could mean your symptoms or blood pressure aren't well controlled; too much could add to dizziness or lightheadedness when you stand up. An easy fix is spacing them out, taking tragacanth about 30 to 60 minutes after your doxazosin. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Doxazosin Used For?

Brand name: Cardura

Doxazosin tablets — sold as Cardura, Doxazosin, and Doxazosin mesylate — treat two conditions: the urinary symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, an enlarged prostate) and high blood pressure (hypertension). For hypertension, lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like stroke and heart attack.

Cardura XL (extended-release tablet) is approved only for BPH symptoms. It is not approved for the treatment of hypertension.
